September 11 Brings National
Service Alumni to a
Day of Service and Civic Engagement
More than 400 people gathered at Boston
University on Saturday, September 11, 2004, to mark the
third anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United
States with a renewed commitment to service and our communities.
Attendees represented such organizations as the NCCC,
the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, Teach For America, City Year,
Generations Incorporated, and the Massachusetts Promise
Fellows (to name a few!).
The event, planned by the National Service
Alumni Network (NSAN) started off with an opening session
featuring the socially positive hip-hop of Pete Shungu
(An AmeriCorps alum) and a rousing call to service by
Reverend Eugune Rivers of the National Ten Point Coalition.
After the opening, attendees split into
groups for a series of workshops and panel discussions.
Each workshop focused on a different way that national
service alums might continue their work to change the
world. Topics included: Social Change through Law, Education
Reform, Out of School Time, Mentoring, and more! Presenters
and attendees were equally pleased with the event.
NSAN is the locally vibrant and nationally
powerful civic association for people who have done service
to community. NSAN also works in partnership with service
organizations to build meaningful programs for alumni.
